A Friend

A Friend

In the hidden corners of an enchanted place known as Wickwood Cottage, two delicate creatures blinked into the world. The sun was still timid in the February sky and the air carried a slight chill, but there they were—two butterflies, stretching their fragile wings for the very first time.

They both emerged from cocoons nestled beneath the early bloom of snowdrops, their wings shimmering in the cool morning light. Their wings were a soft, luminous blue, like the sky at dusk just before the stars appeared. And though they didn’t know it yet, they had been waiting for this exact moment—to find each other.

The first butterfly blinked at her surroundings, adjusting to this new world full of whispers and colours. The second fluttered nearby, catching the soft light that poured into the garden. They hovered for a while, studying each other from a distance, wings beating to the rhythm of something only they could hear.

"You look like me!" exclaimed the first butterfly, her voice delicate as a breeze.

"And you look like me!" replied the second, his wings fluttering in joy.

They circled one another in a dance of discovery, weaving through the stems of crocuses and lavender, their blues twinkling like tiny stars among the early blooms. The garden of Wickwood Cottage was their world now and though the air was crisp with the remains of winter, the warmth of this magickal place was enough to hold them close.

The garden was not like others. It was whispered that Wickwood Cottage held a magick all its own, a magick that could nurture even the smallest souls. Flowers bloomed early here, and the wind seemed to hum lullabies that only the creatures of the garden could hear. In this haven, the two butterflies felt safe, as though they had always been meant to find each other in this very spot.

"I've never been alone, but I feel even less so now," said the first butterfly as she floated beside her new friend.

"Me too," the second agreed and their wings brushed together, creating a soft shimmer in the air. It was as though the sky itself noticed their union, the clouds parting just enough for a beam of sunlight to bathe them in warmth.

And so, the two butterflies struck up a friendship—a bond that felt as if it had existed long before their wings had even opened. They danced among the flowers, whispering to the violets and laughing as the wind playfully tugged at their wings. They marvelled at how they were the same, not just in appearance but in heart, in the way they both cherished the world around them and in the joy they found in each other’s company.

As the days passed, the garden began to bloom even more. Daffodils and primroses joined the snowdrops, creating a tapestry of colour and life. But no matter how much the world around them grew, the butterflies remained side by side. Through the quiet afternoons and starry nights, they danced and fluttered, always in harmony.

Though they were only butterflies, their friendship was timeless, as lasting as the magick that surrounded Wickwood Cottage. Here, in this enchanted garden, they knew they would never truly be alone. They had each other—a friend that would be with them through every breeze, every bloom and every season that passed.

For in this special corner of the world, friendships like theirs weren’t bound by time, but by the quiet understanding that sometimes, in the midst of winter’s final breath, you find the one who will be with you forever.

And so they stayed, two blue butterflies in an endless dance of joy and wonder, always together, in the garden of Wickwood Cottage.
