When Meringue Refuses to Behave

When Meringue Refuses to Behave

The cottage kitchen was unusually quiet that morning.

Lady Dinkles had tied back her apron, gathered her ingredients and opened the windows just enough to let the summer breeze drift through.  Flour dust danced in the sunlight.  The kettle whistled.  Everything seemed just right. Today was going to be a baking day.  She measured carefully...Whisked patiently...

And waited for the glossy peaks everyone always talks about.  Except...

They never came.  The mixture slumped.  The bowl slipped.

A little sugar found its way across the worktop instead of into the recipe.

Lady Dinkles sighed.  Not because the baking had gone wrong... But because she'd invited someone for tea.  Just then came three gentle taps at the cottage door.

Tap... Tap... Tap...

"Oh dear," she laughed. "They're early."

Without another moment to spare she brushed the flour from her apron, hid the rather disappointing meringue behind the bread bin and opened the door.  Standing outside was an old friend carrying nothing more than a tiny bunch of meadow flowers.

"I hope I'm not too early."

"Not at all," smiled Lady Dinkles.  "The baking, however..."

She glanced towards the kitchen and couldn't help but laugh.  Her visitor laughed too.

"You know... I've never remembered a perfect pudding, but I've remembered every conversation I've had over one."

So, they put the kettle back on.  Cut generous slices from yesterday's loaf cake instead and spent the afternoon talking about everything and nothing while the failed meringue quietly waited on the side.

By the time the visitor had wandered home through the trees, Lady Dinkles realised something rather important.  The perfect afternoon had never depended on the perfect pudding.  It had always depended on who was sitting around the table.

As the evening light faded beyond the cottage windows, Lady Dinkles wandered back into the kitchen.  She smiled to herself.

"There you are..." she whispered. "I knew we'd get there in the end."

The cottage filled with the bright scent of fresh lemons, soft vanilla and sweet toasted meringue and before long, a new little fragrance found its place on the shelves of Wickwood Cottage.

A Little Wickwood Thought

Not every recipe turns out as planned.

Sometimes the whisk leaves more flour on the table than in the bowl.

Sometimes the meringue collapses.

Sometimes life asks us to begin again.

But there is still comfort to be found in warm kitchens, kind company and a cup of tea shared with someone who doesn't mind that the pudding wasn't quite perfect.

Our Lemon Meringue melts were inspired by those moments.

Not by perfect baking...  But by warm kitchens, sweet conversations and homes that smell like happiness.

If the story of Lady Dinkles' baking day has left you longing for the scent of fresh lemons, sweet vanilla and toasted meringue, our Lemon Meringue Wax Melts have now found their place in the World of Wickwood.

Until next time...
